FFT for July 9, 2010

This Friday Field Trip I think has affected everyone at some point...

Ah, the Mondegreen, those delightful little lyrics that are "misheard". The term 'Mondegreen' is generally attributed to one Ms. Sylvia Wright, who is credited with coining the neologism in a 1954 Harper's column. Ms. Wright was chagrined to discover that for many years she had misunderstood the last line of the first stanza in the Scottish folk ballad "The Bonny Earl of Murray," which reads:

Ye Highlands and ye Lawlands,
Oh! Where ha'e ye been:
They ha'e slain the Earl of Murray,
And they laid him on the Green.

Ms. Wright misheard this stanza as:

Ye Highlands and ye Lawlands,
Oh! Where ha'e ye been:
They ha'e slain the Earl of Murray,
And Lady Mondegreen.

From the disappearance of Sylvia Wright's tragic heroine, Lady Mondegreen, came the term for describing unconventional interpretations or understandings of oral repetition, usually in the form of song lyrics.

Perhaps the most popular Mondegreen is from Jimi Hendrix's song Purple Haze. Many heard the lyric "'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy" instead of "'Scuse me, while I kiss the sky"

Mr. Hendrix was himself aware that he had been Mondegreened, and would occasionally, in performance, actually kiss a guy after saying that line.

Two great sites for you to visit to see if YOU have the correct lyrics of one of your favorite songs over the past years are:

Am I Right?
and
Kiss This Guy

After all, while a "Fire Engine Guy" might be a heck of a lot more fun than a "Fire In The Sky", nobody wants to be laughed at for the (sometimes REALLY) incorrect words. LOL!

I admit, I did have one back in the 90's. It was U2's "With or Without You". While the lyrics actually were:
See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I'll wait for you
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

What I heard was:

See the storm set in your thighs,
See the phone twist and your sigh
I wait for you.
Sleight of hand and twist of fate,
On a bed of meals she makes me wait
And I wait without you

Yeah, so glad I never sang those lyrics in front of anyone! LOL!

I'd like your input and the Friday Field Trip

In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple—then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a “successful” suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus.

It’s easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily…

But who do you know who lives like that? Do you?

Join the challenge.

Have you ever wondered if we're missing it?

It's crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe-the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor-loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss.

Whether you've verbalized it yet or not.we all know something's wrong.

Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts-it's falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis describes it, you will never be the same.

><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>*><>

I'm sure many of my blogfriends have read the books shown above. "Radical" by David Platt and "Crazy Love" by Pastor Francis Chan. I've heard some things about Crazy Love, all good, but I haven't really heard much about "Radical". I am leaning toward getting them both because I am intrigued by what the jacket covers say, but before I do, I'd love to hear from any of you out there who have read one or both and let me know how the books have inspired you or changed your life, etc. I'm a very careful shopper these days and would love to have some personal insight from friends to help me in my decision making process.

And now, it's time for the FFT. The Friday Field Trip. When I remember (eep!) I post a fun, interesting and/or informative FFT for y'all to enjoy on a Friday.

This one is...a bit different. Welcome to the "Politically Incorrect Ads of Yesteryear!" and "Vintage Ads: What Were They Thinking?"

Yes, two different sites with those ads that make you glad you don't have to live with attitudes like that these days. Now, I do not vouch for the content of first site other than for the ads (as that's the only part I've seen) but the second site is FoxNews and is perfectly safe.

I tell you what, if some of these ads ran today the lawsuits would fall so fast and furious they would be like a blizzard. I had to laugh at the audacity of some of these ads. Things were a lot more humorous before PC came into play – even if they were just completely wrong!

Return of the FRIDAY FIELD TRIP (FFT)! YAY!

It is time to implement another gem that went by the wayside. The Friday Field Trip – affectionately known as the FFT.

The FFT is where I bring you to places around the web – or even here on my blog on occasion. Some of these will be repeats from years past b/c, really, I don't expect you to go back and try to find them from 2005-2007. Kind of a hassle.

Today we have two wonderful "go nowhere" FFT's that do nothing but waste your time - in a really fun way! I think this was one of my most popular FFT's.

So grab your brown bag lunch and have a seat for a good bit of fun in the safety and comfort of Nic's Place!

For the women:
Are you looking for a ruggedly sensitive man? Someone who is good with his hands, loves children and is always happy to see you? Well look no further. The Brawnyman is here. This was a "promotion" that was going on at the Brawny site. They had a "rugged" outdoorsy man who does everything from complimenting you on your new haircut to understanding when you've just had "one of those days". It's HEE-LARRY-US! These gems have been preserved on youtube and have been embedded here for your viewing pleasure. Just click the videos below to view the man that Brawny calls their Innocent Escapes Brawnyman. You will, at the very least, be able to get a laugh or ten out of it!

This next FFT is for everyone and is great for those who need dance lessons.

"Are you tired of rhythm?"

Yes, my friends, it is the ever popular How To Dance Like A White Guy promotional video. A must have for every redneck home. It doesn't matter if you're from the North or South, rednecks are found everywhere.

Good Friday Ponderances

Today we have quite a few things to discuss so I'll get the more fun part out of the way before we get to the serious part of it.

What else could I do for today’s FFT on this Good Friday – the day of the Crucifixion of Christ – than take you to some great flash presentations about Jesus including some presentations about the Resurrection?

I hope you enjoy these presentations and that you get something from them as I have. May the hope that is with those who believe in the Risen Savior be with you today and always.

Fill in the blank: One day, I hope to see _______________.

One day, I hope to see a guy who's perfect, just for me. Well, really, that line came from a poem I remember from my youth. I would say my Savior and the Godly people of the Bible, but I know that will happen and not just "hope" it will. So, here is my FINAL answer: One day, I hope to see Ireland and Scotland – for an extended trip to explore all the little places, pubs, hills, music...

Now, we get to the serious part. My prayer is that somewhere, someone out there finally "gets" it. This is Good Friday - the day that Christ was Crucified for you and me, for the whole world, for sinners. My thanks to my dear friend, Jack Kinsella, of the Omega Letter for the article below.

Special Report: What's So Good About "Good Friday"?

According to Christian tradition, the Friday before Easter is called "Good Friday" because it is the day that Jesus Christ was crucified. GOOD Friday?

I can recall as a kid growing up in a Catholic school thinking it more than a little strange that all those nuns said they loved Jesus, but celebrated the day of His execution as a "Good" day.

Indeed, as a kid, I thought the designation "Good Friday" was evidence that they really didn't LIKE Him very much, despite their protestations of love. My mother had passed away when I was only ten. I didn't think that the day that she died was a 'good' day for me.

There are lots of possible reasons why the day of Jesus' Crucifixion is designated "Good" in English. One is that the word 'good' was derived from the word "God".

Our word 'goodbye' came from the phrase "God be with you," so, according to that line of thinking, "Good Friday" would have originated from the phrase "God's Friday."

But I think it is less a case of the metamorphosis of language than it is an apt description of the Event that took place on that Friday before Passover two thousand years ago.

The execution of Jesus Christ was an event of incredible evil. He was guilty of no infraction, violated no laws, either Mosaic or Roman civil, and His betrayal was orchestrated, the Bible says, by Satan himself.

"And after the sop Satan entered into him [Judas]. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly." (John 13:27)

But while the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was an act of unspeakable evil, it was a necessary part of God's Plan for the redemption of our sin debt.

And the manner in which He accomplished was a demonstration of His Power over good and evil, using pure evil to bring about pure good.

"Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." (1st Corinthians 2:8)

But why was Good Friday necessary? We've gone over this before, but not in several years. Good Friday is the perfect day to revisit the topic. Why did Jesus have to die?

Why, indeed, if Jesus was God, did He have to die? To the skeptic, the whole Cross, Blood and death thing doesn't make any sense. I know many Christians to whom the answer is simply, "So He could be resurrected on the third day."

That was never a satisfactory answer when I was a skeptic, either.

The Scripture says God's Justice demands a sacrifice, but for most Christians contending with the skeptic, that answer is unsatisfactory.

The explanation that only a sinless man was qualified to take on the sins of the world makes sense, but it doesn't answer the nuts-and-bolts question of why He had to die. Not fully.

The answer to the nuts-and-bolts legalities is found, not in the New Testament, but rather in the Old.

In Genesis Chapter 15, we find Abram questioning God's promise that his seed will be numbered as the stars of heaven and that they would inherit the land to which God had led him.

Genesis 15:6 says "And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness."
But Abram wanted a guarantee, nonetheless.

"And he [Abram] said, LORD God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?" (15:8)

It was then that God proposed a blood covenant after the manner of the Chaldeans. "And he [God] said unto him, [Abram] Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon."

Abram knew what to do next. A Chaldean himself, this was something he was familiar with.
"And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not."

The blood covenant worked this way. The animals were slaughtered and cut up. The pieces were intermingled and then carefully arranged to form a kind of aisle through which the two parties to the covenant would walk together, hands joined.

The principle of a blood covenant, and the symbolism of the rended animal parts was clearly understood to Abram. Whoever broke the covenant would end up like those piles of animals.
A blood covenant was, by common custom, a joining of 2 or more persons, families, clans, tribes, or nations, where the participants agree to do or refrain from doing certain acts. More specifically, God had proposed a patriarchal covenant.

The patriarchal form of covenant is a self-imposed obligation of a superior party, to the benefit of an inferior party. In this form, the terms the parties use to refer to each other are: father and son.
God's proposal included not only Abram, but extended to Abram's seed forever.

(Galatians 3:29 makes plain that Christians are also "Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.")

To summarize, Abram has just prepared a blood covenant between himself and God in which his seed would forever be bound to God as heirs. To be an heir, under the implied terms of the covenant, also required being faithful to the Father. Abram understood those terms and waited for God to appear.

Consider the picture. Abram waited, driving away the carrion eaters from his grisly creation, waiting for God Himself to come down, join hands with Abram and together, they would swear a blood oath. God would be the Father of Abram and his descendents, who would then be required behave as sons to keep that covenant.

Genesis 15:12 records that, as Abram waited for God, a deep sleep fell upon him. During that deep sleep;

"it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:" (Genesis 15:17-18)

And there's the key! While the covenant was between Abram and God, by passing through the aisle alone, God signed the contract -- alone -- for both sides, binding Himself to keeping both parts.

We know that Abram's seed did NOT remain faithful to the covenant. And violating the blood covenant demanded that somebody had to die. That was what justice required.

The Apostle Paul was, before his conversion on the road to Damascus, a Pharisee, or a religious lawyer, one well qualified to explain the law of covenant oaths.

As Paul explains, "Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. (Galatians 3:9)

Further, that "they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham." (3:9)

And also, "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith." (3:11)

Of the covenant that God signed on behalf of Abraham, Paul explains; "Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto." (3:15)

The covenant could only be confirmed when the price demanded for its violation was paid in full.

When the Law was given to Moses four centuries later, it was assumed by the Jews that to break it was to break the Abrahamic Covenant, for which the penalty was death. Remember, somebody had to die.

But since it was God Who signed on behalf of Abraham, Paul pointed out the blood penalty required of the covenant was paid in full on Good Friday.

"And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect."

Why did Jesus have to die? Because the covenant demanded satisfactory payment for its violation, and no one who had broken that covenant was qualified to stand in payment except those who signed it. Abram was long dead. And, in any case, it was God Who signed on behalf of Abram (and his seed).

It is for that reason that God stepped out of eternity and into space and time in the Person of Jesus Christ. To keep the provisions of the original covenant and be a true Son of Abraham, as it demanded.

Once having kept its terms on behalf of sinful humanity, it was incumbent upon Him to make payment, as justice demanded, for its violation by those on whose behalf the covenant was signed.

To be torn and rended like the animals that formed the corridor through which God alone passed.
To make restitution on behalf of the seed of Abraham. You. Me. And everyone who ever broke its provision of faithfulness. All of us.

Jesus made that payment on our behalf. On the Cross, as He gave up the ghost, Jesus cried with a loud voice 'it is finished' (Tetelestai!) meaning, "paid in full."

The terms of the violated Covenant were met, its price was paid by its Signer. God's justice was fulfilled. That is why Jesus took on a human form and allowed Himself to be crucified by His own creation. That is the reason the Blood of Christ is so precious. Why nothing less would do.

Because justice demanded it. And because justice was satisfied, a lost sinner need only accept the Pardon obtained at the Cross as full payment for his sins to obtain eternal life. Because of Good Friday, "Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord SHALL be saved." (Romans 10:13)

Our sin debt was paid in full on Good Friday. The only thing now separating God from man is human pride. Accepting by faith the pardon obtained for us at the Cross is a humbling experience.

We've noted in the past that God's way is not our way, and His thoughts are not our thoughts. Indeed, God's way is usually the exact opposite of human thinking. Christians obtain victory by surrendering. We obtain eternal life through the Death of Christ, but to achieve eternal life one has to first die.

"Good" Friday is the day that commemorates the greatest evil ever perpetrated in the history of mankind. But as it turned out, it was the worst day possible for the forces of evil. It marked the first introduction of pure good to this old world since the Fall of Man.

"He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes WE are healed." (Isaiah 53:5)

Happy Easter season!

Friday's Feast and TWO(!) FFT's

For those of you who are long time readers, you know that I used to do a feature every Friday, before the advent of the Friday's Feast, called the FFT AKA Friday Field Trip, where I would take you to a new, different, fun website. Well, I am going to bring a couple in this week for fun that I did either last year or the year before. I hope you enjoy them. They're below the Friday's Feast

Appetizer
Name two things that made you smile this week.

Emily and some emails from someone who is becoming a very good and trusted friend.

Soup
Fill in the blank: Don't you hate it when ________?

Don't you hate it when you're in the shower and someone flushes the toilet or turnes on the hot water in a faucet without warning you first? You could either get scalded or frostbitten depending on which one.

Salad
When you can't go to sleep, what is your personal remedy to help yourself drift into Lullabyland?

Hmmmmm, since I have borderline chronic insomnia, my "remedies" don't always work - however, if you'd like to share some of yours in the comments section, I'd be much obliged.

Main Course
What is something about which you've always wondered but have not yet found a good answer?

Where does the other half of Emily's socks go when they are in the dryer? Why does it take a long time to get over someone? Why do I always seem to be most attracted to the unavailable guys?

Dessert
What is your favorite pasta dish?

I make the most amazing alfredo sauce so I like that with angelhair pasta, grilled shrimp (or chicken) and mushrooms all mixed together. I also have a very basic rotini pasta that is best served chilled. Rotini, diced ham, cubed sharp cheddar, cooked mushrooms and Zesty Italian dressing.
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=

Yes, and now it has come to another FFT. Today we have two wonderful FFT's that do nothing but waste your time - in a really fun way!

So grab your brown bag lunch and hop on the bus (air conditioned with reclining seats and a clean bathroom of course).

For the women:
Are you looking for a ruggedly sensitive man? Someone who is good with his hands, loves children and is always happy to see you? Well look no further. The Brawnyman is here. This is a "promotion" that is going on at the Brawny site. They have a "rugged" outdoorsy man who does everything from complimenting you on your new haircut to understanding when you've just had "one of those days". It's HEE-LARRY-US! Sláinte!

An Irish Blessing
May the saddest day of your future be no worse
Than the happiest day of your past.

It's a late Friday's Feast and FFT

I go out again tonight for the first night of three in a row for the Trail of Lights. I'm going to try and get some pictures to post as well so you can see how beautiful it all is!

So we'll just jump right in with the post!

Appetizer
What was your very first job with a paycheck?

I worked retail for the Limited – hated it but I got some great discounts on cute clothes.

Soup
Did you ever lose something really important to you?

Yes, my heart – long before The Ex, and it's yet to really recover from it. IF there is a next time, I need to be more careful about whose care I give it to.

Salad
What is the best Christmas present you ever received?

Hmmmm, not really sure about that one. I do really enjoy the garnet earrings from James Avery that The Ex gave me the first Christmas we were dating. I wear those all the time. Is that the best? I'm not sure, but I think it has been one of my favorites.

Main Course
Tell about a favorite "hang out" place for you and your friends when you were in high school.

The Flats out at the lake. Senior skip day (which we did every year, not just when we were seniors), after semester finals for fall and spring (those were ½ days), during the summer...you name it, we were there. Underage drinking was huge. I remember the last year getting busted by the Travis County Sheriff's Department and staying there, as a "good" girl, to help clean up the empties that littered the area. B/C I did that they were very lenient and did not give me an MIP – probably b/c they never saw me with anything in my hands anyway, but they did send a "warning" letter to my house to let my mom know that I had been at a party where underage drinking had occurred. I'd already told my mom about it so it wasn't a big surprise.

Dessert
Name something that always brings a smile to your face.

EASY – my daughter!

Next up is this week's FFT.

This FFT contains some fun you can have for your kids and/or yourself for Christmas. These are all just a blast and I have done them all – especially the email from Santa. I do that for Emily every year. It's free and is fun for the kids to get a personalized reply instantly. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I have.

Call Santa for free!
You can call the following number and your kids will get a recorded message from “Santa” until Christmas Eve. Have fun! 1-800-972-6242

Write to Santa and get an instant personalized response!
HO!! Ho!! ho!! Write a letter to Santa Claus? Yes kids its true! Just finish this letter... Santa's waiting for *you*! From the North Pole, Santa will send your reply... faster than Rudolph the reindeer can fly!! Merry Christmas!! Santa Claus will reply to you personally!! Just wait in front of your computer for a few seconds and your reply will magically appear (of course, it might take a bit longer if Santa Claus is really busy or taking a "cookie break"!!).

Email Santa Here

Go Elf Yourself!
Yes, you heard that right. This is a really FUN site that allows you to upload a picture of you and put your head on top on an "elf" and create a fun little dance with music. Create your own elfamorphasis and email it to others!

Get Elfed!

UPDATE:
This little gem was submitted by a commentor:
It's time to play Simon Says with Santa. At this site you cal tell Santa what you want him to do and chances are, he'll do it. Just be careful what you ask for. Go play Simon Sez Santa!

Well, I hope that you have fun this last week before Christmas with these nifty little Christmas gems above. Remember that this season is not about getting, it's about giving – just as God gave us His one and only Son to come down to earth to be born as both human and God so that He would know what it was to be human and experience what we do and yet give us that hope that we can become His child if we believe and accept God's gift of salvation to us through his death on the cross.

Friday's Feast and a reminder FFT

Don't forget to check out the post below this one to leave me an AskNic question.

Enjoy this week's Friday's Feast!

Appetizer
Which language would you like to learn and why?

Arabic or Farsi so that I could work with our government or some anti-terrorist organization and go online and try and help them bust terrorist plots against us and our interests.

Soup
What's the funniest thing you've heard or read so far this week?

There hasn't been much to laugh about this week. Work has been very tense all around - the tension there with EVERYONE is almost tangible and a couple of other things in my personal life - one of which I will post about after tomorrow.

Salad
Which movie was so bad you couldn't watch the whole thing?

I can't remember a movie but I can remember several books. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this one so I know which movies to avoid!

Main Course
If there were a holiday in your honor that didn't use your actual name, what would the day be called?

Oh heck, I have no idea. They already have Mother's Day and to me that is the best thing that I do so I'm not sure what else there would be.

Dessert
Name one movie which is coming out soon that you would like to see.

Ok, I saw the new James Bond movie and I have to say AWESOME! BEST BOND MOVIE EVER! Daniel Craig isn't conventionally handsome and he knows it so he works harder and just shines in his role as the new Bond. I've seen it twice and will see it again. It's just a fabulous, back to basics, cheese and smarm free, action-filled movie.

The other movie I would like to see is The Nativity Story. Word of mouth reviews have been really great and it tells the story of the birth of Jesus in a very well crafed, well acted movie.

Today's FFT is one that I mentioned earlier in the week:

As mentioned, I received an invitation to my very dear friend Captain Picard's Annual Christmas party and I wrote a post about it from my POV. It is up right now. I encourage you to go read it along with the SEVERAL other posts about the party on his blog up now and those coming up over the next couple of days. Every year this is a blast to participate in and I hope you head on over there and enjoy! If you check it out, Tell the good Captian I sent you.

Friday's Feast, a Fun and Worthwhile FFT and an Ode

Wow! This has been a LONG day. Em slept for a couple of hours late yesterday afternoon so she wasn't asleep until close to 10:45 and then I was sleeping at 1:00 - up at 4:00. You know those good old Black Friday sales. I was very close to hitting the outlet malls at midnight but decided against it - my boys are playing right now anyway. Playing poorly, winning by 1 at the end of the 3rd quarter but I'm yelling at the screen nonetheless for them to get it together. After the game, I'm hitting the sack for some much needed shut-eye. The X has Em today so I can get some uninterrupted sleep. Then I might go hit the dance hall and get a dance or two in, but I'm undecided about that.

So, I actually have three things up on my blog this Friday. First up, the Black Friday Friday's Feast, then a delightfully fun and worthy FFT (I loved doing this one!) and last but not least, an Ode on a Black Friday from my dear blogfriend John Earle. He hit the serntiment that I feel so clearly that I couldn't help but share with y'all. If you like it, stop on by and tell him "thank you" and tell him I sent ya!

Friday's Feast

Have you ever changed a flat tire by yourself?

Yes. In drivers ed in high school, they made sure that EVERYONE could change a tire in order to pass. Didn't matter how "clean" your clothes were or how "prissy" you were about your appearance. You did it until you could change it. I'm a big believer in two things about driving - know how to change a tire and know how to drive a stick shift.

Soup
Do you have an "innie" or an "outie" belly button?

I have a deep innie.

Salad
Name a new paint color and describe it.

Er, um, Sparkling Sunshine - a deep, dandelion yellow with yellow glitter in it or how about Ravishing Red - a firey red with red glitter in it?

Main Course
What is your favorite holiday tradition?

At my mom's on Christmas Eve, after we've opened gifts and eaten once we got back from the 6:00 candlelight service at church, we take blankets and sleep out on the floor of the living room with the soft glow of the white lights on the Christmas tree illuminating the room and the quiet whisper of Christmas music playing oh, so softly as we fall asleep.

Dessert
If you were a cookie, what kind of cookie would you be, and why?

My favorite cookie is oatmeal raisin but if I were a cookie I would have to say that I am a warm, gooey, chocolate chip cookie just out of the oven. Homey, comforting, a little hot and completely irresistable! Heeheehee. :)

The Fabulous FFT
A dear friend of mine alerted me to this incredibly FUN FFT! You can Create Your Own Snowflake. Not only is it FUN but it is for a GOOD CAUSE. The more snowflakes that are created through the end of this year, the more money gets donated to the Salvation Army. PLEASE go make a snowflake, as many as you want, and go make money for a great organization that helps everyone.

My First Flake the "Star and Hearts" Snowflake

Go Create Your Own Snowflake(s) Now!

And last, but certainly NOT least, here is the poem from my friend John. He is a writer and created this poem last year and it got such a great response he decided to post it again. Enjoy it!

Our paper came on Turkey day.
It weighed about a ton.
'Twas full of ads for stores with sales
On stuff for play or fun.

Or maybe gifts for someone else,
Or items for our homes.
Seemed everything that stores can sell
Was offered in those tomes.

The Mall would open early,
And to get a super deal,
You had to rise at two or three,
(You’d better pack a meal!),

And stand in line outside the door
To be among the first,
Supplies were short. And all agreed;
To lose out was the worst!

So people from around the town
Did congregate and gather
Outside the doors of many stores,
And all were in a lather.

The folks would push and shove to be
The first inside to buy.
As “Don’t get in my way today,
I’ll knock you down!” they’d cry.

The traffic on the streets, it seemed,
Was packed and barely moving,
And tempers flared and teeth were bared.
'Twas not exactly soothing.

I wondered, in the midst of all
This snarling, angst, and hissing,
If maybe there was something here
That all of them were missing.

What happened to the “Ho, Ho, Ho!”
And “Peace on Earth!” we’d hear,
When friends and family gathered round
To share, from far and near?

This season is supposed to bring out
All the best in man,
Like loving, giving, peace and joy.
At least, that was the plan.

So what’s the answer? Is there, somehow,
Some sure way of stopping
The discontent connected with
Thanksgiving Friday Shopping?

For me it’s pretty simple:
When the mobs rush out to roam
The malls and stores and parking lots,
I’ll stay inside my home.

I’ll ponder God’s atoning Son,
The best gift given yet,
And do my Christmas shopping
On my high-speed internet!

Friday's Feast and a Public Service FFT for Halloween

Appetizer
Create a new candle scent.

I would create a scent that was a mix of jasmine, gardenia and vanilla. Three of my favorite scents. Jasardenilla.

Soup
Name one way you show affection to others.

I am a very touch feely person - I love giving hugs and kisses and holding hands.

Salad
What is your favorite writing instrument?

A rollerball gel pen. Very smooth, no skips or catches.

Main Course
If you were given $25 to spend anywhere online, from which site would you buy?

I have no idea. I generally don't buy online.

Dessert
Are you dressing up for Halloween? If so, what are you going to be?

I am going to be a mommy. :) Though, and I'll have to see if I can find and scan a picture later, but I used to dress up as the suicidal bridesmaid. I had a lot of bridesmaid dresses to "reuse" and so I could get them good and "bloody". I was so good at making myself look dead and bloody that The X's former boss saw me the Halloween of 1998 when I walked into their store (he had forgotten it was Halloween) and thought I had been in an accident and was about to try and administer first aid and call 911. LOL!

Nic's Question: What are you dressing as for Halloween and do you have anything you are doing or anywhere you are going for Halloween?

We are going to the Fall Festival at our church. Emily is really excited about the it b/c on Halloween night our church has this HUGE Fall Festival every year to take the focus off of the macabre part of Halloween that so many tend to focus on (see my dessert answer above). She's 5 and I don't think she needs to be exposed to the monster/bloody/gory costumes out there quite yet. She has quite an imagination and I know that she would most likely have nightmares from them, plus this is a safe environment that is WAY more fun than just going door to door asking for candy that they never get to eat that much of anyway. Our church does really cool moonwalks and games and train rides, there's face painting and they have a petting zoo and good food, etc. Plus you know that the candy there is safe too and hasn't been tampered with. They do not allow unopened bags of candy, receive them that night and distribute the candy between the games the kids play that night as soon as the candy is received.

Today's Public Service FFT:

Please be careful this Halloween with your kids. Many sexual predators and child molestors like Halloween so that they can be around unsuspecting kids giving them candy. Many cities are having a child molester round up that afternoon and are keeping the perverts out of the way until Halloween is over.

If you want to know where the sexual predators around your house or your child's school is located, the BEST place to go is www.familywatchdog.us. It is a National Sex Offender Registry site that maps where the perverts live in proximity to your house and to your child's school. Best of all, it is FREE! Have a happy and safe Halloween.

Friday's Feast and the FFT

Appetizer
Measured in minutes or hours, how much exercise have you had in the last week?

Sadly, maybe 10 minutes. I've been working extremely late hours this week so I've been mostly sitting on my rear, compsing and editing master documents.

Soup
If you had to change your blog title to something else, what would it be?

My brain really isn't working this morning and thinking of one is a bit of a strain on it. (And no that isn't the name of the blog)

Salad
Name one television show you watched when you were 9-12 years old.

Dukes of Hazzard baby - all the way! The originals not the re-runs.

Main Course
If someone gave you $50 to spend with the one condition that it had to be educational, what would you purchase?

I'd take Emily to the children's museum here in town and pay the entrance on that as well as get some educational activities from their store in the museum.

Dessert
Do you tend to prefer dark colors, neutral shades, or lighter/pastel hues?

Since I can wear pretty much any shade I don't have a preference really. It depends on my mood and the situation. Formal...dark colors - black or gray. Casual...anything.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This Friday's FFT is brought to you by my office. Ok, well, not actually by my office, but by a co-worker at my office. I am sure you will get a huge kick out of it! I sure did. :-)

So, I'm sure you all have seen the motivational posters that hang around offices and such right? You have such pictures and "definitions" for things such as TEAMWORK or COURAGE and on and on. They're supposed to be MOTIVATIONAL and, frankly, I find them slightly annoying – though there are a couple that I do like.

Well, if you are like me and like a good laugh – why not take a look at the DEMOTIVATORS from :-( Despair, Inc.? I guarantee you will get a belly laugh or ten from these outrageously funny parodies of the motivational posters.

And, for an extra added bonus, they have a DIY section. Yes, you read me correctly. You can make your own DEMOTIVATOR picture to send to a friend. Try your hand at it HERE.

You can also make your own 16 month calendar with your favorite DEMOTIVATORS on it and then buy it. If that is more your style, you can create one HERE.

Have a blast with this favorite site!

Red shirt for RED FRIDAY'S, jeans, shoes

Soup
Who was the last person you hugged?

Em - when I put her to bed last night.

Salad
What do you like to order from your favorite fast food place?

Which fast food place? McD's: quarter pounder with cheese, no onions with fries. Taco Bell: either a bean burrito with beans, cheese and sour cream only or a mexican pizza with no green onions and no beef. Schlotzsky's: regular turkey bacon club on sourdough, no lettuce, add mushrooms and extra mayo, sour cream and onion chiops and an oatmeal raisin cookie.

Main Course
What time of day do you usually feel most energized?

OBVIOUSLY it's not morning. Probably between 11 and 4 in the morning/afternoon.

Dessert
Using the letters in your first name, write a sentence. (Example: Sweet unusual spaniels are nice.)

I'll have to get back to you on this one. Why don't YOU leave your answer on your name in the comments?
===================================
And next, today's FFT is a reapeat of one of my most popular FFT's. It's always good for a laugh and it's actually a "go nowhere" field trip - one you can sit back and enjoy in the safety and comfort of Nic's Place.

FFT - Support the Soldiers Version *UPDATED AT END*

The above video is a song from Marine Mike Corrado called "My Watch". The words are beautiful and the music poignant. Enjoy the song and the pictures of life in Iraq for the soldiers.
* * * * * * * * * * *

So, I've been absent from posting any FFT's over the past couple of months. For those of you who do not know what an FFT is – it is a Friday Field Trip. A post where I send you places that are interesting, funny, thoughtful or that I think y'all might enjoy. I have hosted a couple FFT's on my site before though.

Well, today I am sending you to some places where you can show your support for our brave men and women in uniform. Over this extended, 3-day weekend take a moment to show your support and your thanks for the sacrifices these men and women are making in order to do something they believe in – give freedom to others and protect our own.

As many of you know, I am extremely pro-military. I always have been, but that is even moreso now that I have a loved one in Iraq. Dan is doing much better, so I thank all of you who have prayed for him and for the other soldiers who were injured in the near drowning accident last week. I also appreciate your continued prayers for SSgt. Hansen's family after his death on Sunday. For those of you who might live in the Nebraska area, there is a memorial parade in Jeff's honor to not only show support and honor to him in the magnitude of his ultimate sacrifice but to also be there to support his family.

I have learned that the Patriot Guard Riders will be there as well to provide support along the way in both Cairo, NE and Minden, NE. Jeff's father contacted them and requested their presence. They perform a very valuable service at these military funerals so any support you show them is wonderful!

The information for the parades and visitations are as follows as taken from the Kearny newspaper:

The village of Cairo is encouraging residents to line its streets to honor Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Hansen of the Nebraska National Guard during a procession at 2 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will be at Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo from 3 to 6 p.m. that afternoon.

Hansen, 31, was injured in Iraq on Aug. 21 along with three other Guardsmen when the Humvee they were riding in turned over, fell into a canal and trapped them inside. He died of his injuries last Sunday.

Hansen joined the National Guard in 2000 and served in Bosnia for six months in 2002 and 2003. He worked as an officer in the Kearney Police Department from 2001 to 2002 and had been employed as a federal police officer at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island since 2004.

Hansen's body will be moved to Minden for additional visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minden.

If any of you can be there to show your support for his family, it would be greatly appreciated and welcome. A concern of theirs is that protesters might be there so the more people who show up in support, obviously, the better.

Ok, so here are the FFT's for today:

"America Supports You," a nationwide program launched by the Department of Defense, recognizes citizens' support for our military men and women and communicates that support to members of our Armed Forces at home and abroad. They have a TON of information on their site including many organizations you can get involved in to support our men and women in uniform.

You can learn how to get involved and show your support by clicking HERE.

When I went to pick Dan up in Dallas on his leave, the USO was there at the airport, supporting the family members and loved ones who had come to pick their soldiers up as well as show support to the soldiers as they came out of the doors into the terminal. Many of the soldiers were flying elsewhere and didn't have anyone at the airport to welcome them home. It was loud and boisterous and patriotic and just WONDERFUL! I strongly urge you to get in contact with your local USO and see about becoming a regular part of the airport welcoming group in your area. Not all areas have it, but for those areas that do, it is worthwhile and uplifting for all involved. They also have free parking for those who participate, regardless of how long you are there at the airport. Some information about the USO...

The USO reaches out through:

  • Airport centers, welcoming weary military travelers with a place to rest and the ability to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings
  • Family and community centers, promoting intercultural understanding and orientation to unfamiliar locations
  • Mobile USOs, reaching out to troops in remote and sometimes unstable locations
USO celebrity entertainment tours bring volunteer celebrities to entertain, lift morale, and express the gratitude and support of the American people.

For 65 years, the USO's mission has remained the same. The USO will support U.S. troops and their families wherever they serve. Across the United States and around the world, the American military knows that the USO is there for them. By supporting the USO, Americans show their appreciation and express their gratitude to the men and women who defend us.

Soldier's Angels was founded by Patti Patton-Bader, mother of Sgt. Brandon Varn, who has recently returned from a year's deployment to Iraq. Soldiers' Angels is an all volunteer run organization, incorporated in the state of Nevada. Soldiers' Angels started in June of 2003. The Soldiers' Angels mission is to provide aide and comfort to any of the armed forces and their families.

More importantly, the slogan describes the motivation behind Soldiers' Angels. By working together and sharing a common vision of service, the volunteers of Soldiers' Angels send care to deployed soldier's and their loved ones at home.

To date they have accomplished to send thousands of care packages to deployed soldiers, helped the wounded at most military hospitals and aided military families in need.

From its very inception, the focus of Soldiers' Angels has been:
Helping to bring home healthy soldiers.

Jacob's Light Foundation's Mission is to send our military overseas necessities and comforts from home. They focus on military without family or support from home. They want to give them the support they need and to be a lifeline from America. I found out about this one from the Glenn Beck program on CNN. I can not stand CNN – I call them the Communist News Network b/c of their liberal anti-American, anti-administration reporting and antics, however, they DO have Glenn Beck who is just one heck of a great conservative media personality and I try and never miss his nightly broadcast.

Dorine Kenney sent packages to her son in Iraq and soon she started sending supplies to soldiers in his platoon that never received mail. Her efforts were a huge hit and the soldiers really enjoyed getting a piece of home while they were there overseas. Her son sadly was killed in Iraq in 2003 after the transport he was on was hit by an IED. After Jacob's death, it would have been easy for Dorine to stop sending packages and try to move past losing her son and somehow go on. Dorine Kenney did just the opposite. To date she's sent over 61,000 pounds of supplies to soldiers. Honoring her son, her efforts have been named the Jacob's Light Foundation.

Right now, what is really needed over there are blood coagulants and that is currently NOT provided for the soldiers over there right now and it is lifesaving treatment for them. An amendment to the defense authorization bill has been placed on the floor of the Senate in order to provide more money for this necessary need. To date, Jacob's Light Foundation has been able to send about 650 units of blood coagulant over there. In order to provide more of this until the military gets the money to provide it they need donations and if anybody wants to help then with donations, they can send it to:

    Jacob's Light Foundation
    116 Nadia Court
    Port Jefferson, New York 11777

If you would like to know more about Jacob's Light Foundation, please click HERE.

    Go to AnySoldier.com

I have this one already linked on my sidebar, but this is another worthy cause for those military men and women who get no mail and so I am highlighting them here on this FFT.

Any Soldier Inc. started as a simple family effort to help their son, Army Sergeant Brian Horn. They knew his unit, the 173rd Airborne Brigade was living under very rough conditions, and they were sending Brian care packages as often as they could.

Brian started the idea of Any Soldier to help care for his soldiers. He agreed to distribute packages, that came to him with "Attn: Any Soldier" in the address, to the soldiers who were not getting mail. Any Soldier Inc. started in August 2003 to help the soldiers in one Army unit, thus their name. However, due to overwhelming requests, on 1 January 2004 the Any Soldier effort was expanded to include any member, of any of the Armed Services, in harms way. As of this date they have 2,529 soldiers they have supported!! Soldiers can be signed up to receive these care packages and there is a place on the Any Soldier.com website that will allow them to do so.

If you would like to help donate to this worthy cause to send care packages to ANY military man or woman in all of the 5 branches of the military who are not receiving any mail you can click HERE.

Copier giant XEROX has gotten in on the act too! This one takes only a couple minutes to do. I've done it before and it's easy, quick and it does make a difference!

The mission of Let's Say Thanks is to provide a way for individuals across the country to recognize U.S. troops stationed overseas. By submitting a message through this site you have the opportunity to send a free personalized postcard greeting to deployed servicemen and women.

The postcards, depicting patriotic scenes and hometown images, were selected from a pool of entries from children across the country.

All you have to do is click on your favorite design and either select the message that best expresses your sentiment or draft a personal note. The postcards are then printed on the Xerox iGen3® Digital Production Press and mailed in care packages by military support organization Give2TheTroops®.

Xerox is committed to helping people across the nation express their gratitude to our troops overseas. The launch of this program is aimed at reminding them how much Americans appreciate their service.

To participate in this FREE program to send cards to soldiers that are serving in foreign countries please click HERE.

Since December 2002, GIVE2THETROOPS has supported HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of deployed U.S. troops with loving care packages and letters from all over the nation. This was made possible only with the help of tens of thousands of generous and patriotic friends in the U.S. and abroad. This is the least we can do to show our troops how much we care about them. Our troops need to know that we support and appreciate the sacrifices they make for us, our families, and our future. This is about giving back to those who give all.

GIVE2THETROOPS Mission Statement: To support the physical, moral, and spiritual health of America's armed forces in combat zones around the world through the letters and packages prepared and shipped by caring volunteers.

GIVE2THETROOPS is a NONPARTISAN, NON-POLITICAL, PATRIOTIC organization aimed at supporting U.S. deployed and wounded troops in harm's way. We are managed by patriotic volunteers who ensure that deployed U.S. military members in all branches of service are supported with letters and care packages.

A BIG thanks to my friend Michael Manning for alerting me to this organization...

The music icon Cher is a HUGE supporter of Operation Helmet. Cher has teamed up with Dr. Bob Meaders, founder and president of Operation-Helmet.org, and she has put 6 figures of her own money in and testified before a Congress subcommittee. Basically, our troops have Vietnam era helmet that can deflect a bullet. But with the new helmet webbing and center pad insert, a blast need not mean brain injury. Cher visited an Army Hospital unannounced one night, and while she opposes the war in Iraq, she is 100% for our troops. She was asked by a soldier for her autograph on his cast. She said "Sure, what's your name?" The soldier had to look at his name badge. He suffered a severe concussion from a roadside bomb and that's when Cher got involved and is a very outspoken supporter of this program.

OPERATION HELMET is a nonpartisan, charitable grassroots effort that provides helmet upgrade kits free of charge to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as those ordered to deploy in the near future. These helmet upgrade kits consist of shock-absorbing pads and a new strap system. Operation Helmet depends on tax-deductible donations. For $75-$100, depending on the manufacturer, added safety and comfort can be provided for a trooper. But donations of any amount are welcome. The donation can be designated for a specific branch of the military, a particular unit or an individual trooper. 100% of donations go toward helmet kits. There are no administrative costs deducted and the Operation’s books are available for inspection by anyone who wants to see them. To date, Operation Helmet has sent upgrade kits to over 24,000 troops.

These helmet upgrades do three primary things:

  • Protection - Shock-absorbing pads keep the helmet from slapping the skull when hit with blast forces, fragments, or being tumbled along the ground or inside a vehicle. This decreases the chance of brain injury from bombs, RPG's, vehicle accidents, falls, etc.
  • Comfort - If it is more comfortable, it will stay on troop's head longer and more often.
  • Stability - Keeps the helmet firmly on the head and out of the eyes.

The life you save might save another!

They currently have a 3,717 (and growing) backlog for these kits so you can see just how very necessary these kits are.

For more information and to help support this much needed cause please click HERE

If you would like to add other links to organizations that support our men and women in uniform that you know of, please leave your suggestion in the comments and I will add them to this post. I will be turning this post into a page of it's own once it goes into the archives that others can find easily so your links will be easily accessable to others.

    Appetizer
When was the last time you visited a hospital?

The last time I visited a hospital was when I was giving birth, so it was kind of a mandatory “visit”.

    Soup
On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how ambitious are you?

Ambitious? Oh I would say if it interests me I’m a 9 or a 10. If it doesn’t interest me I’d say around a 5.

    Salad
Make a sentence using the letters of a body part. (Example: (mouth) My other ukelele tings healthily.)

MOUTH – Making Our Unique Thoughts Heard.
FACE – Fear Acknowledges Courage Everyday.
HEART – Hear Everything And React Thusly.
LIPS – Love Is Personal Service.
CHIN – Courage Helps In Need.
ELBOW – Every Love Begins On Wonder.

    Main Course
If you were to start a club, what would the subject matter be, and what would you name it?

I think I would start a club for support of single parents with kids who look older and have intelligence beyond their years. I know it’s difficult sometimes for Emily b/c she’s much younger than she appears and acts and people expect so much out of her that she’s not able to give yet since she’s only 4, is the size of a six or seven year old and the intelligence of at least an 8 or 9 year old. I would call it MOW – Mothers of Wunderkinds. Wunderkind is German for “wonder kids”. (Of course there would be no discrimination of single dads in this club so they would be welcome to join too.)

    Dessert
What color is the carpet/flooring in your home?

Living room is rust colored; carpet, kitchen, bathrooms and walkways a gray/rust style of “brick tile”; master bedroom and second bedroom is gray carpet.

And FINALLY the Friday Field Trip.

    Friday's Feast and the FFT

    First up: Friday's Feast

    Appetizer
What is a word that you use that would not be considered common?

I use “peachy keen, jellybean” all the time. As in:

Hey, Nic. How’re you doin’ today?

    Peachy Keen, Jellybean!

It’s my standard response when things are going well. It just seems to flow.

    Soup
What theme of calendar do you have on your wall this year?

That would be the theme of the bare-walled calendar – as in I don’t have one up.

If you could buy a new outfit for someone you know - who would it be and what would you purchase for them?

I either would buy a beautiful iridescent blue ball gown for my friend Amy with glittering, strappy shoes and dazzling diamond and sapphire jewelry that cascades down her ears and neck for her to accept the RITA award for best paranormal romance for her first vampire book in print – and that night she would win for Best First Novel and Best Novel in that category.

    OR

I would buy her a sizzling blood red velvet ball gown with ravishing ruby and diamond jewelry and sexy heels for her to wear while accepting the Oscar for best adapted work for screenplay for her book to silver screen adaptation of her vampire novel – which subsequently spawns off a very successful series of movies from the following novels.

What is the last beverage you drank?

Alcohol – Wednesday night: Clos du Bois Merlot (2003) and a Fleming’s 52, which is coffee with Kaluha, Bailey’s and Gran Marnier.
    Non-alcohol: Healthy milk

And now for the FFT. This week’s FFT is actually a very helpful piece of information. Do you HATE dealing with the automated menu’s at your bank/credit card company/airlines/government agencies/etc...instead of getting a live person?

Of course you do! Well, now there is a website that helps you to bypass all of the automated JUNK(!) and get to a live person directly. It is simply called Get Human. This site has been featured on the Fox News channel as well as some other non-cable news shows on the 3 main stations (NBC, CBS, ABC). It is a time saver as well as a frustration saver. Use it, love it, tell others about it!

    Friday's Feast and the FFT

Today's post is a little late but it's there. I didn't have a chance to do the Thankful Thursday yesterday but will return to it next week.

    Friday's Feast

What is the last thing you had to have repaired?

That's easy, the back brakes on my van last week.

If someone gave you $2,000 with the stipulation that you had to spend half of it on yourself and give the rest to charity, where would you spend the $1,000 and which charity would receive your remaining $1,000?

I would probably buy body massages for a year (Lord knows I have soooo many knots in my muscles). I'm not sure which charity but it would go toward helping abused, neglected, abandoned and hungry children.

    Salad
What is one of your favorite songs from the 1980s?

It's like the Lay's commercial – you just can't stop at one and I can't choose just one

You enter a pet store. Which section do you go to first?

The puppies. I love to watch them play and be all cuddly and cute.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how athletic are you?

Um, would that be athletically inclined, athletic ability or athletically active?
    Athletically inclined – 6
    Athletic ability – 9
    Athletically active – 2

And now it's time for the FFT. Today we are going to be visiting a completely tacky and tasteless site. Have you ever wanted to just take a wax strip and rip the hair off of a guy's chest to take out any issues you are dealing with? Now you can do that virtually to...David Hasselhoff. Yes, the knight riding, lifeguard crooner himself. He takes his shirt off and you get to apply the wax strip and RIP it off with a satisfying ripping noise. Keep going until you have his chest smooth as a baby's bottom and then you can start all over. It's rather fun!

So go ahead and indulge yourself and go visit Wax On, Wax HOFF.

    FFT and Friday's Feast

So. Alien cow abductions...who knew they were such a big problem?

I mean seriously, other than on Southpark. However, it seems to be much worse than first anticipated or reported. This website will inform you all about the dangers of alien cow abductions and you can see pictures and read stories from those who have been through it so that you can prepare your herd for such an event...you know, just in case it ever happens on your farm/ranch/land. Prepare now or be sorry later! http://www.cowabduction.com/

Now it’s time for the Friday’s Feast. I’ve come to really enjoy the Thankful Thursdays and Friday’s Feast. It’s a cool way of being able to tell y’all more about what makes me...me.

    Appetizer
What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?

It depends on where I go.
From the store – Blue Bell Ice Cream: Natural Vanilla Bean. It’s the closest to homemade vanilla ice cream straight from the old hand crank ice cream maker.
From Marble Slab Creamery – Cheesecake ice cream with lots of cherries mixed in. Not maraschino cherries, but the real tart, bing cherries with juice. YUM!
From Baskin Robins - Peanut Butter Chocolate and Jamocha. Nice dark Dutch chocolate and ribbons of frozen peanut butter that isn’t crunchy to eat but rather firm yet creamy. Jamoca is their coffee ice cream.

Those are the only 3 places I really eat ice cream at.

    Soup
What are 3 things you would like to put in a time capsule?

    1. Pictures of me and Emily.
    2. A Twinkie and a Fruitcake to see if they’re still edible in 100+ years. LOL! I bet they are.
    3. ?

I have never considered what to put in a time capsule so I don’t really have a 3rd selection. Maybe music or my Bible that has all the notes in the margins.

    Salad
Name something you are 100% sure of.

I can name 2. That I will go to heaven when I die and that I love my daughter more than life itself (and that she loves me with all her little heart!)

    Main Course
What is something you do to calm yourself when you're stressed or upset?

Good night nurse! When am I NOT stressed/upset lately. Um, I will listen to music; go for a long drive in the country with the windows open; do deep breathing exercises; talk to my best friends MC and/or Amy and most importantly talk to God about it.

    Dessert
If you could receive an invitation to any important event, what would you like it to be?

Um, probably to be at all the VIP events for Sturgis and get the “schwag” (heehee!) or to go to all of the inauguration events for a President that I voted for. (And it won’t be a Democratic one either!)

    FFT and the Friday’s Feast

    This is bananas!

Just when you think you've seen every trick the Internet can offer, along comes an amazing advancement like Monk-e-Mail. Choose and dress one of three chimpanzees in an office -- a boss, a co-worker or a receptionist and make him / her stylish with new clothes, hairdo, glasses, and background. Then, select a voice track or type a text message and then choose a pre-recorded message for your monkey to speak out loud before sending the monk-e-mail to a friend. Pre-recorded message include a kiss-off to a butt-kisser, or a song for the co-worker who wears too much cologne. Better yet, record a personalized phone or computer-microphoned message and you will be aped. (Some features work with Internet Explorer for Windows only.) It is interesting how you can use punctuation to influence the intonation of the synthesized voice.

If you feel your messages are not being heard by conventional email, take a moment and give Monk-e-Mail a try. Send it to people you love (or not).

From which country(s) are some (or all) of your ancestors?

Well it depends on which ancestors you’re talking about. My biological ancestors were American Indian, French, English, Spanish and there’s one more in there that I always forget. I am the Heinz 57 special blend

My adopted family (the only one I’ve ever known b/c I was adopted from birth) are all from Holland. My grandparents on my mom’s side immigrated from the Netherlands as children. My great-grandparents on my dad’s side immigrated from the Netherlands as young adults, I believe.

    Soup
How would you describe your sneeze?

Usually violent – almost never dainty. It depends on if it sneaks up on me or I sneeze more than 3-4 times in a row, then it comes out very loud. If I can feel it coming and it’s only a few times I can do the "silent sneeze". My sneezes sound like coughs for some reason. Very few people can tell the difference so I rarely get a "bless you" when I sneeze.

    Salad
What is the last thing you cleaned?

The last thing I cleaned would have been the stove LATE last night after making homemade guacamole for 75 people for the Cinco de Mayo festival today at work. There was avocado residue on top of the stove – which is white.

    Main Course
Who made the strongest first impression on you?

Seeing my daughter for the first time notwithstanding – three people in my life. This is in chronological order:
    1. The person that I was seriously involved with from Kansas City back in the early-mid 90's. I was instantly smitten and he drew my attention like nobody else and kept it for years – even after we were finished. He changed the way I view relationships and that's both for the good and the bad. He colored my world in a way that no one else has come close to doing.
    2. My dearest friend MC. My first concrete memory of her was at a Taco Cabana during lunch when we were in training in 1996. She and another girl were "vigorously discussing" the gay lifestyle. The first of MC’s brothers had just "come out of the closet" so she was very sensitive about the subject and this other girl was being extremely rude. I thought it was an unfair argument b/c this other girl was basically ganging up on MC and trying to get others to do the same. At the time MC was rather heavy but extremely attractive and this other girl was petite and curvy and one of those people who felt a sense of entitlement b/c she was "cute" – former cheerleader, homecoming queen, etc. I felt it was such a gross display of "I'm the cute one so I'm right" that I jumped right in and stated that a report that had been done on 20/20 the night before gave the results of a scientific study regarding the DNA of a "straight" person and someone of the homosexual persuasion and that the results of the study showed a definite anomaly in the genes of the person who was gay. I cited statistics and quotes from the researchers in the scientific field who had spent years on the study. Nobody else talked while I was talking, which was a far cry from the melee that was going on when MC and this other girl were "discussing". By the time I was done the other girl just said a quiet "oh" and that was the end of that discussion. MC and I became friends after that, she said that she had thought I was nothing but beauty and fluff (all style no substance) until then when she found out that I was actually one of the smartest people she knew (which means a lot coming from a MENSA member), and I found out that she was one of the most fascinating, witty, intelligent and kindest people I have ever met. That friendship has continued and grown into the best friendship I have ever had, one that I treasure and cherish.
    3. Matt. He is the only person who ever made me do a double take the first time I saw him. He was charming, witty and warm. Unfortunately he stopped showing that side to me and started showing it to someone else after we were married.

    Dessert
Name one thing you want to accomplish in your lifetime.

I’ve already accomplished it. The most important thing to me since I was a child was to be a mother and I am a mother to the biggest blessing I have ever received. She is a true gift, answer to prayer and miracle. I got pregnant having been on bc for 10 years AND after I had her I found out I had a severe hormonal anomaly/imbalance that makes it nearly impossible for me to get pregnant, only I never knew I had it b/c the bc had balanced out the imbalance but still left me with the (almost) inability to become pregnant – or so I thought. I am grateful and thankful beyond words now since Em is most likely the only child I will ever be able to have.

    And Finally...
I need to send a shout out to my very dear friend Great White Bear. He called me on something earlier in the week that he was absolutely right to call me on. My emotions were running high and I posted something that was in poor taste and, as GWB said, was beneath me. That has since been removed. GWB, never thought you’d be my conscience, but I'm glad that you stepped up and became that. I needed it and I'm sorry. I'm thankful for friends like you who keep me in line, so to speak! True friends tell the truth, even when the truth is a little painful at times.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how polite are you?

It depends. In the car probably about a 5. Not in the car about an 8.5 or 9. I believe in saying please, thank you, ma'am and sir, holding the doors for others and carrying heavy things for people who can't, etc., etc., etc. It's just the way I was raised. However, I do have a problem with interrupting others and I've been trying to work on that.

    Soup
What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?

These Jokes from a friend earlier in the week when I needed a pick-me-up:

    THE LONELY LITTLE BRAIN CELL

Once upon a time, there was a female brain cell, which by mistake happened to end up in a man's head. She looked around nervously, but it was all empty and quiet.

"Hello?" she said, but there was no answer.

"Is there anyone here?" she cried out a little louder, but still no answer except the echo of her own voice.

Now the female brain cell started to feel alone and a little worried so she made a quick trip around the inside of the man's head. After finding nothing else in there she yelled at the top of her voice, "HELLO, IS THERE ANYONE HERE?"

Then she heard a very faint voice from far, far away.....

    "We're all down here."
    ==================
Three old guys are out walking. First one says, "Windy, isn't it?"

    Second one says,

"No, its Thursday!" Third one says,

"So am I. Let's go get a beer!!"
    ==================
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlour and pulled
himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath he
    ordered a banana split.

The waitress asked kindly, "Crushed nuts?"

    "No," he replied, "Arthritis!!"
    ==================
A man was telling his neighbor, "I just bought a new hearing aid. It
cost me four thousand dollars, but it's state of the art. It's perfect."

"Really?", answered the neighbour. "What kind is it?"

    "Twelve thirty."

Tell about the funniest teacher you ever had.

Hands down Fireman Fred Daughtry. He was my teacher in 7th and 8th grade at the private school I went to. I couldn't wait for his class every day. Not only b/c he was a good teacher, but he was a good teacher b/c he was able to put the information across in a way that was entertaining and made you remember it. I just love him. I ran across him last year when I was volunteering and working with the Katrina evacuee's from Louisiana and Missisippi. After teaching in the early 80's, he became a pastor and it was so good to see him and let him know how things were going and that I had a beautiful (almost) 4 year old. He is a good heart, a good person and a former fire chief - hence the nickname he had which was "Fireman Fred".

Complete this sentence: I strongly believe that ______________________.

I strongly believe in many things but there are two that I will talk about today.

    1. I strongly believe that honesty is the best policy in every relationship. Lies create situations that become worse as time goes on, whereas the policy of being honest spares a lot of hurt for everyone involved right up front.

No relationship can be maintained or grow when lies are a part of it. Dishonesty breaks trust and no relationship can survive in an atmosphere of distrust. The way I see it, if someone lies to you about one thing, even if it is by keeping something from you, then what else have they lied to you about? As the lies snowball, the relationship weakens to the point of breaking and once that trust is broken, it is a Herculean task to repair it, and in some cases, it can never be repaired.

    2. I strongly believe that abuse of any kind (physical, emotional, sexual, mental, etc.) is reprehensible, deplorable and never acceptable. Abuse is about bullying someone weaker than you. It’s about causing hurt and pain to those unable to defend themselves for whatever reason. Never, ever, ever, ever is abuse acceptable against anyone. Ever. It boils my blood when I hear about abuse, especially against the weakest ones of all that need our protection – children.

If I had my way, every single abuser would be subject to punishment IDENTICAL to what they have done to those who they abused. You sodomize a child and/or beat them – guess what, Big Bubba in the state penitentiary is going to be your roommate for the next, however many years. Let’s see how you like it. You starve a child then force them to eat rancid meat, drink a Clorox mixture, etc. – guess what your next meals are going to consist of – that is if you’re given anything to eat or drink? You whip a child, a woman, a man, an animal, guess what? Yup, you guess correctly, you’re the next one that whip will be applied to. I have no leniency with abusers at all. There is a special place in hell reserved for them – it is even said so by Jesus himself.

In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus proclaims that how you treat the hungry, the thirsty, the sick and other "least of these," is how you treat Jesus himself. Jesus makes Himself the hungry one, the naked one, the homeless one, the unwanted one, and He says, "You did it to Me."

Matthew 25:34-40: [Jesus] ... will say to [the sheep] at his right hand, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."

Matthew 25:41-43 Jesus goes on to say to the goats on his left hand: "You who are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me..."

Verse 46 then says: "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous (those in vs’s. 34-40) to eternal life."

Ok, so that should have been the main course portion and NOT the dessert portion, but it's whatever is on the menu as it's listed.
